Review: Relationships rarely collapse all at once; more often, they unravel through silences, misunderstandings and unfinished conversations. SAM;AAJ explores these emotional tensions through dance, poetry and music, presenting an intimate portrait of a queer relationship under strain.
What begins with playful audience interaction gradually unfolds into an emotionally layered story. Staged as a one-hour performance without an interval, the production follows Samir and Miraj — played by Jainil Mehta and Kunaal Sangtani — as an ordinary evening at home slowly spirals into confrontation. Through monologues, conversations and movement, the two men
are forced to confront whether love alone can sustain a relationship fractured by emotional distance. Rather than centring entirely on queer identity, the production focuses on the emotional realities of companionship. Its anxieties, misunderstandings and longing feel universally recognisable, making the story relatable beyond its queer
perspective.
Poetry by Amrita Saluja and Devarshi Shah, along with voiceovers by
Nakuul Mehta and Aaryama Salim, deepen
the production’s emotional texture. Jainil and Kunaal remain committed throughout, communicating as much through movement as dialogue, though Jainil appears more emotionally expressive, while Kunaal’s comparatively restrained performance creates a slight imbalance in parts.
The original music, coupled with minimal yet thoughtful stage, sound, and lighting design, keeps the focus firmly
on the characters’ emotional journey.
The Hyderabad show concluded with a standing ovation — a fitting response to a production that feels intimate, honest and affecting.
